Washington/Notimex - La Casa Blanca confió hoy en que existen suficientes votos para que la iniciativa DREAM Act sea aprobada cuando mañana sea llevada a votación en el pleno del Senado estadounidense.
“Creemos que existen suficientes votos en el Senado entre quienes podrían apoyarla y quienes en el pasado han votado en favor de la iniciativa”, indicó Cecilia Muñoz, directora de Asuntos Intergubernamentales de la Casa Blanca.
Muñoz dijo que si bien el número de votos favorables resulta difícil de precisar “nosotros les hemos dado todas las razones para que lo hagan”....mas

A vegetable garden on the White House lawn

Wow, this is big.  The Obamas have started a garden on the White House lawn.  I can already see the Bushies snearing.  It may not look proper to some.  But the reality is that gardens like these are what our country really needs.  Homegrown food with no pesticides and no genetically engineered seeds.

The garden will be tended by the First Family and local public school students.  The food will be used in the White House kitchen.

What a great example for the country.

For more than a decade, food activists have rallied, cajoled, even pleaded for a vegetable garden on the White House lawn. Now they're finally going to get it.

Today, first lady Michelle Obama will host a groundbreaking for a White House kitchen garden on the South Lawn. She will be joined by students from Bancroft Elementary in Northwest Washington, , whose participation in the project will continue past today, as they help with planting in the coming weeks and harvesting later this year.

The 1,100-square-foot garden will include 55 kinds of vegetables, including peppers, spinach and, yes, arugula. (The selection is a wish list put together by White House chefs.) There will also be berries, herbs and two hives for honey that will be tended by a White House carpenter who is also a beekeeper. The chefs will use the produce to feed the first family, as well as for state dinners and other official events. more

Public Lies; Private Secrets

While the political history of this country is full of politicians fudging just a bit..... the current administration wins the prize for honest dishonesty. They aren't embarrassed when they are caught with their pants down-- they just smile and say "we didn't say that."

What is really unfortunate is that the nation's president is often seen as a model for honesty and integrity - not this time -- except for those who are lying to themselves.

A Ludicrous Denial

What do you call it when White House officials say one thing in public and almost the exact opposite in private?

You might call it lying.

President Bush yesterday took the highly provocative rhetorical step of likening those who support negotiating with our enemies to Nazi appeasers. For most people following the presidential campaign, it was an obvious attack on Democratic frontrunner Barack Obama, who has been particularly critical of Bush's refusal to talk with leaders who disagree with him.

On the record, White House officials issued disingenuous denials that Bush was talking about Obama. But on background, they admitted as much.

CNN's Ed Henry reported that "White House aides privately acknowledged the remarks were aimed at the presidential candidate and others in his party."

Sasha Issenberg writes for the Boston Globe: "White House officials indicated that the criticism applied to Obama."

Brian Williams reported on the NBC Nightly News that "it was clear to those listening that it was in part to make a point about Barack Obama back home." NBC correspondent John Yang then added: "Privately, White House officials said the shoe fits the Democratic frontrunner."

When asked at yesterday's gaggle if Bush's remark was "in any way directed at Senator Obama," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino replied: "It is not." And not only that: She tried to blame Obama for such an interpretation. "I understand when you're running for office you sometimes think the world revolves around you," she said. "That is not always true and it is not true in this case."
