How the Senate Voted -
NO Votes for the DREAM Act
By JULIA PRESTON
Published: December 18, 2010 - NEW YORK TIMESThe vote by the Senate on Saturday to block a bill to grant legal status to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrant students was a painful setback to an emerging movement of immigrants and also appeared to leave the immigration policy of the Obama administration, which has supported the bill and the movement, in disarray.

The bill, known as the Dream Act, gained 55 votes in favor with 41 against, a tally short of the 60 votes needed to bring it to the floor for debate. Five Democrats broke ranks to vote against the bill, while only three Republicans voted for it. The defeat in the Senate came after the House of Representatives passed the bill last week...more

Reporting from Washington —
A last-ditch Democratic effort to establish a path to citizenship for some children of illegal immigrants failed in the Senate on Saturday, likely derailing any attempt at sweeping immigration reform in Congress for the foreseeable future.
The bill, known as the Dream Act, had passed the House, and its advocates and Democratic sponsors hoped that they could muster enough Republican votes to bring the legislation to the floor. Instead, it fell victim to a GOP filibuster, one in which a handful of Democrats also blocked the bill. The final tally was 55 to 41.
Dozens of young activists crowded the galleries above the Senate floor in support of the bill, many wearing college graduation mortarboards. Some held hands as senators cast their votes...more

Senado de EU frena ley para legalizar a jóvenes indocumentados
La llamada 'Dream Act' no logró 60 votos requeridos para llevarla a votación final la próxima semana.
Dpa Publicado: 18/12/2010 10:53 - La Jornada - Mexico, D.F.
Washington.

Five Votes were needed in the Senate for the DREAM Act to pass

Washington, DC - This morning, a bipartisan majority in the US Senate voted in favor of permitting debate on the DREAM Act. Unfortunately, 60 votes were needed and the measure will not move forward this year. We are thankful to the 52 Democrats and 3 republicans who stood by us, and ashamed of the 41 Senators who voted to kill this critical piece of legislation that would create a path to legal status for up to 2.1 million young people in America.
We are disappointed and angry. Not only was the vote harmful to the nation, but the rhetoric used by many Members of Congress ignores reality in a disturbing way. Undocumented young people who need the DREAM Act are hard-working and full of potential. We have worked, and continue working, to get educated and be a positive contribution to society. We will remember in future elections who these senators were that chose to use their position in congress as a pulpit for hateful rhetoric, and failed to do the right thing for millions of young people seeking an education.
Our campaign may be coming to an end and a new stage in our movement for dignity and human rights is about to begin. We will continue fighting for our dreams, and we will be able to mobilize an army of dreamers. Some of them will be future doctors, engineers, educators, and business leaders that will create jobs and opportunities. Some of them will be future soldiers and generals to represent us in the military. All of them will fight for a stronger and more united America. Our hopes for the future are based on a history this nation of immigrants has already lived. That is why we hope, that is why we dream. We see the light while walking in darkness. We see the dawn before the rest of the world.
As undocumented leaders, we urge dreamers across the country to stay strong and
healthy. This is a hard moment for all of us, but more than ever before we have each other to rely on. Sooner or later, the dream is coming true!

Key Senate Republicans are threatening to pull their support of the START nuclear arms treaty because they don’t like the way Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is handling the Senate floor schedule.
On the second full day of debate on the treaty, three Republicans — Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham – accused Democrats of playing politics with the treaty by scheduling Saturday votes on repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and the DREAM Act.

Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, scheduled the vote on the student measure, which is known as the Dream Act, late on Thursday. The Senate will vote on a version of the bill that passed the House of Representatives on Dec. 8.
The bill gained some momentum after passing the House by 20 votes, including 8 Republicans, a wider margin than its supporters had expected. But on Friday the Senate count appeared to be short of the 60 votes Democrats need to bring the bill to the floor for debate. Its sponsors, including Senator Reid and Senator Richard J.
