Details of the DREAM ACT - Part II

NOTHING is being given away-

Undocumented young people will have to work very hard to become legal residents.

The requirements for eligibility under the DREAM ACT are VERY stringent. It will take DREAM ACT students up to 12 years to become citizens.

In the meantime they cannot have any type of criminal record.

If they are enrolled in college they will not be eligible for federal student grants. If they live the 40 states that do not have in-state tuition for undocumented students, they will have to pay international tuition rates, which would be like paying private college tuition.

If they are in the military they have to receive an "honorable discharge" - (25% of military discharges are NOT honorable)

If they do not go to the military they have to successfuly complete at least 2 years of college. This means they can't fail any classes.

• The DREAM Act would NOT give legal status to 1.3 million people. As the most authoritative study makes clear (http://www.migrationpolicy.org/pubs/Backgrounder1_Dream_Act.pdf), the number of students who ultimately qualify for legal status would likely be much smaller.
• The DREAM Act is NOT an amnesty. It is designed to assist only a very select group of young people who would be required to earn their way to legal status.
