Immigration Policy Center - Local Enforcement of Immigration Laws Through the 287(g) Program:
Time, Money, and Resources Don't Add Up to Community Safety
March 3, 2009

Washington D.C. - Tomorrow the House Committee on Homeland Security will hold a hearing on the 287(g) program - a partnership program between the Department of Homeland Security and local law enforcement agencies who are deputized to enforce federal immigration laws. This controversial program has come under fire from criminal justice experts, advocates for victims of domestic violence, immigrant advocates, and others. Recent reports have found that the 287(g) program is costing localities millions to implement while Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) provides little oversight and support. Additionally, crime-solving activities are being compromised, trust between police and community is eroding, and accusations of racial profiling and civil rights violations are rising. Furthermore the agreements are being used as political tools that interfere with the kind of effective community policing that protects and serves our communities.
