Today, Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona signed SB 1070 into law. When it goes into effect, SB 1070 will be the harshest anti-immigrant law in the United States. Below is a statement from Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center:
"By signing SB-1070, Governor Jan Brewer has made it clear that civil rights for the myriad multicultural communities in Arizona are not a concern for Arizona's elected officials. This law is not only racist; it also usurps the exclusive right of the federal government to regulate and enforce immigration laws.
"As a lawyer, I am shocked that Governor Brewer has, with a stroke of her pen, turned back the clock on the progress we've made in the United States on civil rights. As a person of color, I am frightened about the disastrous ramifications this law will have on all communities in Arizona and across the country. Governor Jan Brewer has given the green light for Arizona authorities to racially profile people at the expense of keeping the peace. This law is not about keeping neighborhoods safe. It is state-sanctioned discrimination that will make life miserable for Arizonans of all colors."
